Nursing is one of the oldest medical professions since the dawn of history. It is based on science and skill because it depends on science and technology to keep pace with the rapid progress in the health field and to meet the community’s need for distinguished cadres in their scientific and practical level in the field of nursing.

Alexandria University took the initiative to conclude an agreement with the World Health Organization to establish the first institution for learning nursing sciences in the Middle East to graduate nurses qualified scientifically, morally and psychologically to advance the message of the nursing profession. The Higher Institute of Nursing was established at Alexandria University under the supervision of the Faculty of Medicine on July 4, 1954. The first batch of university nurses with a bachelor’s degree graduated in 1959, and their number was (five) graduates.

A master’s degree was established in 1969/1970, followed by a doctorate in nursing sciences in 1976/1977. The Higher Institute of Nursing was then transformed into a fully-fledged college by Presidential Decree No. 287 of 1994, accrediting the first university college of nursing in the Arab Republic of Egypt, affiliated with Alexandria University. During this period, up until 2012, 54 classes graduated, totaling 7,663 graduates with a bachelor’s degree in nursing sciences. The college also awarded master’s degrees in nursing sciences, doctorates in nursing sciences, and postgraduate diplomas in various nursing science specialties.

Graduates serve as members of the full healthcare team, which includes specialists and technicians. Through this team, graduates provide direct nursing care to patients, their families, and those with health needs.

As a result of the continuous efforts of the college administration to maintain and continue to excel and advance, the college graduates have occupied the focus of attention in the field of healthcare, and all local, Arab and international entities are now rushing to the college graduates to benefit from their expertise to work in hospitals, treatment and educational centers. Many college graduates have also occupied prestigious leadership positions on the local, regional and international levels. The intensive program to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing was implemented on March 22, 2014 to solve the problem of the shortage in the number of nursing graduates and to solve the problem of providing job opportunities for graduates of other colleges.
